G4 Geomagnetic Storm Causes Northern Lights Visibility

Staff Report / FLXlocal.org

A severe geomagnetic storm has been detected, reaching G4 conditions as of October 10, 2024, at 6:00 PM MDT.

Geomagnetic storms are disturbances in Earth's magnetic field, which can vary in intensity from lower levels to severe conditions. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) advises the public to stay informed about the storm's progression by visiting the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) website.

For those in areas within the predicted auroral extent, especially at night and depending on weather conditions, there is potential to observe the Aurora Borealis, commonly known as the Northern Lights.

Infrastructure operators and authorities have been alerted to take necessary actions to mitigate potential impacts from the storm. These may include increased and frequent voltage control challenges, anomalies to satellite operations, and possible degradation of GPS services.

The Aurora Borealis has been reported visible across a wide region this evening, and observers are encouraged to share any photographs taken during this event.
