Staff Report / ROClocal.org
The Rochester Contemporary Art Center is currently showcasing a project titled "Highlighting the Works in Queering Democracy." This exhibition features various artists who engage with themes related to LGBTQIA+ identity and rights.
Paul F. Yount, an artist from Venus, Florida, has created a large-scale oil painting titled "Invisible Butterflies." This piece depicts Yount and his husband, Walter A. Mojica MD, enveloped by a whimsical environment that includes a chaise lounge, flowers, and butterflies, emphasizing themes of protection and resilience amidst adversity faced by the LGBTQIA+ community.
Quincey Miracle, a transmasc/nonbinary and queer artist from Buffalo, presents a silver gelatin print called "Partner #3." The work is one of ten portraits exploring gender fluidity and expression, capturing the internal and external tensions experienced by nonbinary individuals concerning their gender identity.
Renee Caisse, an 18-year-old lesbian artist from Westminster, Massachusetts, contributes a piece titled "Resilience," which reflects on the long history of the LGBTQ+ movement and highlights the essential role of lesbians in advocating for queer rights. The work serves as a reminder of the importance of honoring past struggles to continue the fight against oppression.
Renée LoBue, a multidisciplinary artist based in Montclair, New Jersey, presents an audiovisual installation called "ALLIES = All Love Lies in Expressing Support." This installation features a self-portrait of LoBue dressed in a business suit, representing gender fluidity, alongside an audio narrative that addresses the history of LGBTQIA+ rights and the significance of allyship in the ongoing struggles faced by the community.
The exhibition demonstrates a commitment to engaging with issues surrounding identity, rights, and resistance in the context of democracy and inclusivity.
